About Great River Arts: Great River Arts began its journey in 2006, focusing on restoring and painting historical French maps of the Mississippi River. Art collectors and interior designers were captivated by the subtle enchantment of these gently painted maps, leading to a growing demand for restored and painted historic maps across the country.
The historical map collection quickly expanded into custom map services for private estates, resorts, lakes, public lands, and regional attractions—all showcasing the vintage charm of earlier works, with borders, cartouches, and fonts inspired by historic maps from the 1850s and earlier.
Each piece of art created by Great River Arts is the result of a collaborative process involving cartographers, architects, colorists, and professional researchers. With an adventurous and creative spirit, the team continues to produce original works, actively pursuing new map suggestions and collaborations while traveling and working from a home base near Glacier National Park, Montana. Great River Arts remains dedicated to crafting timeless map art and sharing its journey with the world.
ABOUT THE MAP:
Located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, United States, Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the U.S and the largest alpine lake in North America, and is situated between the borders of California and Nevada, just west of Carson City. Expanding for 122,160,280 acre-foot, with a depth of 1,645 ft, and 72 miles of shoreline, Lake Tahoe is known for its crystal clear waters and panoramic view of surrounding mountains, beautiful parks and forests. Lake Tahoe is said to have been formed by the collapse of a volcanic crater, some two million years ago. The entire landscape of the Lake Tahoe Basin was created by the works of nature-volcano, the shifting of geologic faults, and glacial movement.
Thousands of years ago, the Native American tribe, the Washoe, who were nomadic hunter-gatherers, inhabited the Lake Tahoe region, throughout California and Nevada, including the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Derived from the Washoe language, the name Tahoe is said to be a mispronunciation of the Washoe word, “Da ow”, meaning "the lake", and interpreted by some to mean “big water”. Exploration of Lake Tahoe first began with Lieutenant John C. Fremont, an American soldier of European descent, who came across the lake on his second exploratory expedition on February 14, 1844, while heading west. Bigler was the official name of the lake, named in honor of California’s third governor John Bigler, until 1945, when the lake was legally established as Lake Tahoe.
The diverse flora and fauna of of the region brings life to the landscape, with incredible mammals, birds, trees, wildflowers and aquatic life. The black bear is one of Lake Tahoe’s most beloved wildlife species, the mountain yellow-legged frog is endemic in the California area of the lake, and living at the lake year-round is the Northern Goshawk. Common to the waters of Lake Tahoe is the mountain whitefish. The beautiful and unusual "snow plant" can be seen in spring-time among melting snow patches, while the sugar pine can be found throughout the Sierra and Cascade mountain ranges. Growing only on Lake Tahoe’s sandy shores is the Tahoe Yellow Cress.
Lake Tahoe offers up the opportunity to enjoy many great adventures, in locations such as Emerald Bay State Park, Monument Peak, and Tallac Historical Site on the California side, along with Sand Harbor Beach, Flume Trail, and Memorial Point Scenic Overlook in the Nevada region of Lake Tahoe.
