I play all of my 78 records on my own turntable then use the VJM record grading system:

N = As new (usually doesn't apply to 78s)
N- = Nearly mint - no visible signs of wear
E+ = Plays like new, very few signs of handling, just tiny scuffs
E = Shiny and new looking, a few inaudible scuffs and scratches
E- = Still shiny, a few light scratches
V+ = Average condition 78 with some scuffs and general use. Surface noise not overly pronounced
V = Moderate, even wear, very playable. Surface noise audible but not bothersome
V- = Quite playable, there is surface noise but it is well below music level. There is some distortion from wear and the record may have scratches

My 78s are very well packaged using thick cardboard and bubble wrap to enclose the record which is then floated in packing peanuts inside an outer box.
