Lefebvre (1843-1917) as a pupil of Gounod and Thomas he won numerous prizes at the Paris Conservatoire and was the 1870 Prix de Rome winner.  Like many of his period, he made a tour of East Asia at the close of his time in Rome.  In 1884, he won the Prix Chartier in 1884 and again in 1891.  In 1895, he followed Benjamin Godard at Professor of Ensemble at the Paris Conservatoire. 

His operas "Zaïre" (1887) and "Djelma" (1894) are probably his best known works, though not performed today, were popular in their time.  His oratorio "Judith" (1879) was considered a landmark work for the art form.  Lefebvre also composed a long list of other works, including 4 other oratorios/cantatas, a symphony, as well as numerous chamber works for a variety of instrumentations.
