Arbutin is extracted from the leaves of many different plant species, most commonly bearberry. It is a highly regarded skin lightening/brightening ingredient, often used as a safer alternative to Hydroquinone. Arbutin is water soluble and can be added in the water phase of your formulation.  Suggested usage rate is 2-4%.

We also sell alpha arbutin powder, which is arbutin powder than has an alpha glycoside instead of the normal beta glycoside and has been found to be more effective than beta arbutin.  Beware, we have encountered a number of manufacturers who instead of producing actual alpha arbutin (it is a rather expensive process), they just add starch to normal beta arbutin and pass it off as alpha arbutin.  It is very difficult to test, you would need to determine the specific optical rotation to do so.  If you do purchase from another supplier, we encourage you to compare the effects of ours and theirs.  We have thoroughly vetted our supplier to ensure that we have the highest quality alpha arbutin out there.

Some notes about hydroquinone: Hydroquinone is one of the most popular skin lightening agents used today, but the popularity of products like arbutin is growing everyday due to the potential health risks posed by the use of hydroquinone.  Hydroquinone powder is restricted from being sold on eBay and there is a large push for the FDA to ban it completely.  It is illegal in several countries worldwide, but the USA has yet to ban it.  If you are using hydroquinone or plan on using it, make sure you are aware of the potential negative effects it can have your body, particularly when used long term.
