An impressive antique black silk-plush top hat manufactured by Henry Heath Limited of London, one of Britain's most distinguished historic hatmakers, and supplied expressly for R. J. Devlin of Ottawa, Canada.

Established in 1822, Henry Heath developed an international reputation for fine-quality headwear, particularly its elegant silk top hats. The company occupied its celebrated premises at 105–109 Oxford Street, London, and supplied customers in Britain and throughout the world.

This example features a traditional tall, gently flared crown with a beautifully reflective black silk-plush finish, a curled brim with grosgrain-bound edge, and a black grosgrain hatband with side bow.

The interior retains its original cream-colored lining, prominently displaying Henry Heath's elaborate royal-warrant crest, Oxford Street address, and the inscription:

Manufactured expressly for R. J. Devlin, Ottawa – Sole Agent.

The original brown leather sweatband and decorative rear bow are also present.

Condition

Good antique condition with visible age-related wear. The silk plush retains considerable gloss and its characteristic directional sheen, with some surface irregularities, light marks, and areas of wear visible under direct lighting.

The grosgrain brim binding is visibly frayed with localized deterioration along the edge. This is the most notable condition issue.

The original leather sweatband remains intact but exhibits creasing and age-related wear. The interior lining shows discoloration and scattered spotting, while the manufacturer's crest and retailer markings remain clearly legible.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

An attractive surviving example of traditional British silk-hat craftsmanship, with the additional historical interest of its original Canadian retail identification. A desirable piece for collectors of antique headwear, formalwear, and historic British hatmaking.
