German “Hirschfanger” Forestry Official long hunting cutlass, complete with the original-issue leather and brass scabbard. Made in Solingen, Germany by E&F Hörster Company - marked with "HHS / sword" trademark monogram on the ricasso. E&F Hörster Company was founded in 1850; it registered the "sword monogram" trademark in 1923. This cutlass appers to be made in the inter-war period.

This is the German Forestry Official dress uniform cutlass with fancy mirror-polished triple-etched blade and gold plating on the brass acorns, hilt fittings of the clamshell guard, and the hoof quillon. Large European stag handle is decorated with the customary 3 gilt brass acorns with oak leaves and the brass hoofs quillon/clamshell guard. Long 13” / 33 cm blade is triple-etched on both sides with detailed hunting scenes; the spine is etched with laurel leaves. Leather scabbard with the gilt bronze throat, chape, and acorn frog stud is in near-mint condition. The throat and chape are stamped with number 42 on the back. Overall condition for the cutlass and scabbard is excellent.

The overall length of this fine Hunting Hirschfanger from the pip to the handle’s “acorn” nut is just a bit over 18-3/4" / 47.7 cm. The beautiful triple-etched blade has a hunting scene on obverse depicting a boar being attacked by dogs with the hunter close behind grasping a rifle in his right hand and a cutlass in his left; the end panel is finished off with a bird in flight. The reverse side depicts the scene of the kneeling hunter aiming a rifle at a large stag and deer jumping over a log. The panel ends with a capercaille sitting on an oak leaf sprig whistling. Excellent frosting behind the etch; it really does a great job of highlighting the relief on the blade. The blade is buffered by the original brown leather washer; the cutlass fits perfectly in the scabbard, it’s a snag fit. The tip is not damaged; the edge is blunt as was made at the E&F Hörster factory; there is no frog.  The workmanship throughout this piece is outstanding throughout; it is a very beautiful blade and probably the best-preserved you will see for this type. This outstanding hunting cutlass makes for a very flashy hunting sidearm; it will be a great addition to any collection.
