19th century French paperweight circa 1880 (+/-).

Since our original listing of this piece, there has been much discussion in various forums with collectors/authorities and numerous opinions offered as to likely/possible maker...and it has come down to two (2) names: Pantin or (late) Clichy. A single opinion of St Mande was mentioned based on the rose cane, but we do not see the similarity and were it St Mande, we feel others would have cited them as a possible maker. Paul Dunlop authored an article (PCA bulletin) specifically about weights such as this having been made by Pantin. That said, all opinions agree it is French and 19th century. We leave attribution to the bidders.

Notably large, handmade, art glass weight featuring a meticulously laid out spaced millefiori design comprised of thrity-five (35!) different, individual canes (including a rose), arranged within the small spaces created by the latticinio/muslin twists. The craftsmanship is excellent and the quality of the canes is very fine...in a beautiful range of colors, including: pink, white, cobalt, red, green, blue, lavender, etc.

Size/Condition: Measures 3.25". Some tiny, production trapped air bubbles. Light wear to dome, assumed to have been polished a bit at some point in its long life. Heavy foot wear. Unmarked, undated.
