THE AUDI SPORT QUATTRO – A GROUP B LEGEND
The Audi Sport quattro was developed as Audi’s ultimate evolution of the original quattro and was created specifically to allow Audi to compete with a highly specialised car in the legendary Group B rally category.
Presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1983, the Sport quattro featured a dramatically shortened wheelbase, approximately 32 cm shorter than the original quattro, giving the car significantly greater agility and making it far better suited to the demands of international rallying.
Under the bonnet was an extraordinary 2.1-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine featuring four valves per cylinder and twin overhead camshafts. In road specification it produced approximately 306 hp and 350 Nm of torque.
The car retained Audi’s permanent quattro four-wheel-drive system and incorporated extensive lightweight technology, including body panels constructed using advanced composite materials such as aramid/Kevlar and carbon-fibre.
The Sport quattro was homologated for Group B in 1984 and became an important link between Audi’s road cars and its increasingly sophisticated factory rally machinery.
The real car was produced in extremely small numbers. Audi records only 21 examples finished in the distinctive Kopenhagenblau colour, making this particular colour combination especially interesting to Audi and quattro collectors.
MODEL CONDITION
Based on my own careful visual inspection, the model is generally in very good collector condition.
Please note that, due to the age of the model, there are some small areas where the paint has developed minor bubbling. These are visible on close inspection and are consistent with age-related paint deterioration. This has been taken into account when describing the condition of the model.
Apart from the minor paint bubbling mentioned above, I could not identify any other significant visible defects.
The original protective display case and outer sleeve are also in very good overall condition, with only minor signs of storage consistent with the age of the item.
