became a character player in the sound era. Known for such films as Tom Sawyer, Detective (1938), High Sierra (1941)
starring Humphrey Bogart, Tall in the Saddle (1944) starring John Wayne. 


Born: 1887, London, England; died: 1958, Santa Monica, California.
