Description:

Originally conceived by George S. Appleton and Oliver B. Bunce, Picturesque America was published in 1872 74 in two massive volumes that contain hundreds of beautiful sceneries of America across the entire continent. They are still breathtaking and refreshing today. It was one of the largest publication projects undertaken in America up to that time. Sketched via pencil and pen by finest artists of the day on sites, the project required the talents of more than 20 writers and 30 artists and engravers. The work was completed in 48 parts (semi-monthly via subscriptions and or bounded into two volumes of 1872 and 1874). On top of the numerous nice wood engravings in each part, the most memorable and the highest quality print of all, perhaps, is the finely finished, extremely detailed steel plate engraving (only one in each part).

This steel plate engraving entitled Connecticut Valley from Mount Tom was originally penciled by JD Woodward and engraved by SV Hunt. It appears in volume II of the original Picturesque America with a copyright entry of 1874 on the print. It depicted the beautiful view of the Connecticu River [ near Canadian Border in New England, from this vintage point, one can see the Oxbow, Northampton, Hadley, South Hadly, Hatfield, Amherst, and Green Mountains in Vermount ] with a steam ship and a train in the background.
