Here you are looking at a piece of VCO, part # CLV0905E, from Z-comm providing voltage controlled oscillation from 896 MHz to 914 MHz. As the company refers, the CLV series VCO is a unique design against the common V series VCO offering lower phase noise and linear tuning. Testing shows the actual usable frequency range extends from 880MHz ~ 950 MHz, this is further comfirmed by the linear tuning curve and stable power output in this frequency range as shown on datasheet.
The major advantages of the CLV series are higher immunity to microphonic effects and reduced phase hits over an extended operating temperature range (-40 to 85°C). Data from other V-series VCO on similar frequency range shows the normal phase noise @10KHz is around -105dBc so this CLV0905E shows 8dBc better off than common V-series VCO.
With tuning voltage from 0.5 to 4.5V, it provides a convenient way to form a low noise LO oscillator without any charge pump op-amp in low-pass filter of any PLL circuitry. This again eliminates any deterioration on its excellence phase noise performance at -113dBc @ 10KHz by the op-amp and again making circuit simplier and cost saving too.
There are numerious informations; articles and books on PLL design but recently I find an article from National - "PLL Performance, Simulation, and Design" by Dean Banerjee comes handy on-line here for your reference. It is a bit on academic but interesting if you wants to go into maths.
There are also free softares helping you design on PLL + VCO oscillators, e.g "ADIsim Design" from Analog Devices; and "PLL Design Tool" from Hittite and "Webench Designer" from National etc. Datasheet shows the land pattern as well so making your design easy to follow.
