AD8313 Log Amp/Detector

from Analog Devices

Here you are looking at one piece of AD8313 Log-amp or detector with 70 dB dynamic range and works from 100MHz to 2.5GHz.

For those who use the AD8307 before would be amazed on how well this chip performs on the wide dynamic range of over 90dB, so makes it the best choice in IF log amp function in Spectrum Analyzer (SA). However, AD8307 works up to 500MHz only with the smt package I am selling. That is fine in SA as the RF to be measured is downconverted to much lower IF frequency by the mixer when they comes to the front end.
Should you want to use it directly on higher microwave frequency, ADI have this AD8313 for frequency up to 2.5GHz.

AD8313 is mainly used in control loop to maintain the RF output level or as with its brother, AD8307, to measure the RF power (RSSI). Again this chip is very common, so for sure you would find lots of project reference from the interent. And as usualy, ADI provides a lot of application notes to use this chips so it is worth to go there for a check.

I do have a point to say. If you check it out from the specification, you would see there is a huge error of -5dB when the input signal reaches 0 dBm, so you better keep the rf signal to below -15 dBm in order that the measurement or control to be meanful. That is to say, the dynamic in this case is from -65 dBm to -15 dBm (i.e. 50dB). That is still very good for RF control.

As a supplement to the description, there is a series of log-amps in this frequency range, namely the AD8311, AD8312; AD8313 here; AD8314 and AD8315 (check below comparison table 1). Among them, AD8313 provides

1
the fastest response time -> only 40ns compared to 70ns or even 150ns of others

faster measurement time and
more reliable in control circuitry

2
the widest dynamic range, 70dB against 45dB or so of others (a 25 dB big difference!)
weaker signal can be measured
without loss of accuracy

That are the reasons why there is price premium for AD8313. Check for comparison among AD83xx on ADI.

Note that they are all in 8-Lead SOIC package. This chip is brand new stock in original cut tape. So bid with confidence. Photo shows the loose part that I have taken out for photos.
