INSIDE DUSTJACKET ..... SYNOPSIS ....
Established in the belief that imperialism as a cultural phenomenon had as significant an effect on the dominant as it did on the subordinate societies, the "Studies in Imperialism" series seeks to develop the new socio-cultural approach which has emerged through cross-disciplinary work on popular culture, media studies, art history, the study of education and religion, sports history and children's literature. The cultural emphasis embraces studies of migration and race, while the older political, and constitutional, economic and military concerns are never far away. It incorporates comparative work on European and American empire-building, with the chronological focus primarily, though not exclusively, on the 19th and 20th centuries, when these cultural exchanges were most powerfully at work.
This work explores the sexual attitudes and activities
of those who ran the British Empire. The study explains the pervasive
importance of sexuality in the Victorian Empire, both for individuals and as a
general dynamic in the working of the system. Among the topics included in the
book are prostitution, the manners and mores of missionaries and aspects of
race in sexual behaviour.
About
the Author
Ronald
Hyam is Emeritus Reader in British Imperial History at
the University of Cambridge, and Fellow and former President of Magdalene
College. He is the author of several books on the British Empire, including
most recently Britain's Declining Empire: The Road to Decolonisation 1918 1968
and, with Peter Henshaw, The Lion and the Springbok: Britain and South Africa
since the Boer War (2003).
Very, very thorough research !

EDMUND
MARLOWE writes ……. The definitive account of how the British reacted
sexually when they encountered the very different mores of their subject
peoples. In summary, one might say that early reactions were largely receptive and
positive for both rulers and ruled, but sadly gave way to the influence of the
homegrown Social Purity Movement of the 1890s.
Most of my reading is historical and this
riveting history by the leading expert on many aspects of the British Empire is
the best I have read for many years. It is one of those rare books that, though
extremely well-researched and argued with vigorous logic, are at the same time
so well-written and fascinating that they should appeal to readers of both
popular and academic history.
Homosexuality is a recurring topic, as it
occasioned the most violent cultural clashes with British values. Hyam shows
how in its traditional pederastic form it was very widely practised in Asia and
Africa in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Most fascinating of all is his
account of King Mwanga of Buganda and his enormous harem of pubescent boys
presented to him by their noble parents in accordance with a Bugandan tradition
valued for the bonds it fostered between the Kings and their nobilities. This
should be compulsory reading for those African leaders who now claim that
homosexuality is unafrican.
For me, the true mark of great historical
writing is that one should not be able to tell when it was written, as to
venture into the past encumbered with baggage from one’s own age is to be
immediately susceptible to anachronism, the greatest sin of the historian.
Empire and Sexuality lives fully up to this. This is history written to
enlighten and entertain the reader, and anyone ready for the culture shock
involved in any true voyage into the past will be delighted.
The drawback to this rather old-fashioned
approach to writing history is that two groups of people may be upset. Readers
who expect to be told what to think may be disconcerted by Professor Hyam’s
non-judgmental approach, particularly where it concerns sexual behavior which
has run foul of the new puritan order which arose in the 1980s and is
brilliantly summarised in Professor Mackenzie’s foreward in words as succinct
and accurate as they are heartfelt and damning.
Equally, I suspect that many of his
colleagues will have been frustrated and irritated by his insistence on
engaging the reader rather than them. Sadly, I find far too many modern
academic historians allow themselves to be waylaid into a mutually glorifying
and ephemeral debate on the correct theoretical approach.
Strongly recommended.
FASCINATING …….. The sort of book I absolutely revel in -
partly anecdotal, mostly academic, heavy with footnotes but providing a window
into the sexuality of previous generations. There is also a lot of useful stuff
about homosexuality (repressed or unrepressed) and leadership, a subject which
has always fascinated me.
In addition, it is refreshingly non-judgmental about the age of consent
and sexual activity with or between children; it manages to describe the practices
of earlier times without condemnation, and simply tries to understand them in a
wider context. In fact, the closest it gets to criticism is the suggestion that
some of the individuals portrayed made unwise choices of companion, or allowed
themselves to be carried away by their sexuality and neglected duty, family,
country or other major responsibilities in pursuit of it.
This is a review written before actually finishing the book, which will
be updated when I have. However so far I'm very impressed and am finding it a
thoroughly enjoyable reading experience.
Well written - Absolutely
pulls NO punches!! …….. Hyam
walks a thin line in this book, that between the Scylla of condoning or
trivializing concubinage and the Charybdis of its single-minded condemnation.
He begins with non-technical coverage of the psychology of sexuality, and
proceeds to contrast official attitudes and the Purity Campaign with imperial
scandal and many highlights from individuals important in the history of
British Empire. He is convincing in his central thesis on the origins of these
conflicts. This book focuses mainly on India, and deals particularly with how
British sexual attitudes influenced race relations.
