Pre-9/11 World Trade Center Twin Towers Elongated 1943 Steel Penny — WTC New York — Date Visible — Magnet Tested
Unusual vintage elongated coin depicting the original World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York City, produced on a genuine 1943 steel Lincoln cent.
This is an especially striking World Trade Center design. The original Twin Towers dominate the face of the elongated coin, with architectural details visible throughout both buildings.
Beneath the towers, the design reads:
WORLD
TRADE
CENTER
N.Y.
A beaded border surrounds the design.
1943 STEEL PENNY — DATE STILL VISIBLE
One of the most interesting features of this particular example is that the original host coin can still be identified.
Despite being elongated, the reverse retains portions of the original Lincoln cent design, and the date “1943” is still clearly visible on the coin itself.
That is particularly significant because 1943 was the year the U.S. Mint produced Lincoln cents primarily from zinc-coated steel rather than the usual copper composition as a wartime measure to conserve copper.
MAGNET TESTED
I have also personally magnet tested this elongated coin, and it is strongly attracted to a magnet, consistent with the steel composition of a 1943 Lincoln cent.
This piece therefore has three particularly useful identifying characteristics:
The 1943 date remains visible on the actual coin
The host coin is strongly magnetic
The original maker/seller's handwritten card identifies it as a “1943 STEEL PENNY”
This is considerably more documentation than is normally available with an old loose elongated penny.
ORIGINAL MAKER/SELLER HANDWRITTEN CARD
The handwritten identification card shown in the photographs is original to my purchase of the piece.
It reads:
WORLD TRADE CENTER
1943 STEEL PENNY
I purchased this elongated coin directly from the person who made/sold these pieces. The handwriting on the card is that person's handwriting, not something I added later.
The card has remained with the elongated penny and will be included with the purchase.
I am the original owner of this collectible, having purchased it directly from the person who produced/sold it and retained it ever since.
CONDITION
Vintage condition with age-related toning, oxidation, discoloration, surface marks and wear consistent with its age and the elongation process.
The World Trade Center design remains very well defined, particularly the two original Twin Towers and WORLD TRADE CENTER N.Y. lettering.
The reverse retains remnants of the original Lincoln cent, importantly including the visible 1943 date.
The coin has not been cleaned or polished.
Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition. You will receive the exact piece pictured.
TWO DISTINCT PIECES OF AMERICAN HISTORY
This is an unusual crossover collectible connecting two very different periods of American history.
The host coin is a 1943 steel Lincoln cent, produced during World War II when copper was being conserved for the war effort.
The later elongated design depicts the original World Trade Center Twin Towers, making it a surviving piece of New York City memorabilia from the World Trade Center era before September 11, 2001.
September 11, 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, adding particular historical relevance to surviving memorabilia depicting the original Twin Towers.
For collectors of World Trade Center memorabilia, Twin Towers souvenirs, pre-9/11 New York City memorabilia, elongated coins, Lincoln cents or 1943 steel cents, this is an especially unusual example.
Included:
The exact World Trade Center elongated 1943 steel penny shown in the photographs plus the original maker/seller's handwritten identification card.
