About This Meteorite
It is estimated that the Campo del Cielo meteorite fell 4,000 years ago!
The first record of it was in 1576. A Spanish governor learned of the iron from the Indians who reportedly believed that it had fallen from heaven. The governor sent a military expedition to look for this iron and a few pieces of a huge iron mass were found! They used the iron as anvils to make weapons. It wasn't until later they discovered the material was of meteoritic origin, and the name means Field of Heaven.
This iron meteorite likely traveled hundreds of millions of miles from the asteroid belt in between Mars and Jupiter!
Have you ever seen a "shooting star?" "Shooting stars" are meteors, pieces of an asteroid or comet debris, that if large enough survives the tumble through earth's atmosphere and land on earth as a meteorite! Some meteorites are iron, the core of an asteroid like this meteorite. The composition of this meteorite is about 92% iron, 5% nickel and 3% trace elements.
As an astronomer and meteorite hunter, I am fascinated by the journey meteorites have taken through space and the scientific insights they hold.
The Cosmos has an extraordinary story to tell—this meteorite preserves one small chapter of it.
