Up for sale is a beautiful mid-19th-century French gilt sterling silver (vermeil) ciborium / pyx, dating from circa 1850–1870, during the Napoleon III period.
This piece stands out for its fine craftsmanship and features three finely painted enamel medallions around the base. Each medallion depicts a saint associated with one of the theological virtues:
• Saint Philomena holding an anchor (Hope)
• Saint Helena of Constantinople with the True Cross (Faith)
• The Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus and Saint John the Baptist (Charity)
The silver retains its rich gold vermeil finish, complemented by a lovely natural patina. It bears French silver hallmarks and the maker's mark J & C within a lozenge.
An exceptional piece of antique French ecclesiastical silver, ideal for collectors of Catholic antiques, sacred art, religious artifacts, and antique church silver.
