Carnet tangerois is a 1996 illustrated travel book written and illustrated by the French artist Pierre Le-Tan. It depict a melancholic, deserted, and semi-fictionalized version of Tangier, Morocco.
Fifty-five copies of this work were
produced—accompanied by an etching by Pierre Le-Tan on Arches vellum and
numbered 1 to 51—along with four artist's copies numbered I to IV, constituting
the first edition. The Tangier described in these pages
does not reflect reality. Every trace of Arab civilization seems to have been
erased. Little remains of the Beat Generation era—the time of Burroughs,
Kerouac, and Ginsberg—or of the exotic city so beloved by Cecil Beaton and
Barbara Hutton. It feels like a remote, deserted Nice. The villas, apartment
buildings, cinemas, bars, and nightclubs—with their nondescript
architecture—serve as reminders that Tangier was once an International Zone.
