This cable will allow you to charge your device, and use USB host mode for flash drives, game controllers, and many other USB devices.

Samsung Galaxy S III - SGH-I747 (works 100% on stock with a USB game controller, keyboard and mouse). If you want to mount a USB flash drive, you need root access. The cable should also work out of the box on other S3 variants.

I can confirm that this cable is working 100% with a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, and Samsung Galaxy S III (SGH-I747). It also works 100% with the Nexus 4. However, ziddey's patches are required.
This Y-cable should work on all devices that support OTG capabilities. However, for some devices the ability to effectively charge the device through the female micro-B USB port may need to be enabled in the kernel.
I recommend Timur's kernel, if you're using the Nexus 7. You can see the cable working successfully with my GSM Galaxy Nexus below. It's running Franco kernel:
