Hare was always
so hungry that he would play a trick on anyone if it might produce a meal. He
tricked Lion into giving him a dish of beans, he tricked Crocodile so
thoroughly that he got all his eggs for supper, he tricked his wife into
feeding him a delicious plate of white ants, but Cockerel got the better of
him, and tricked Hare into producing a meal Hare couldn't enjoy at all. Hare is
just one of the characters whose adventures delight us in this collection of
animal folk tales. There's another story about four brothers, an ant-bear, a
spider, a fly, and a fire-fly who go up into the sky in search of their stolen
cow. They get him back, and then fall out because they can't decide whose
contribution was most important in retrieving him. Then there's a story about
ten girls collecting wild plums; imagine the horror of one of them when the old
woman who is chasing them suddenly turns into a lion. These are good stories,
full of humour, drama, magic and the wisdom which they derive from their
origins in Acholi tribal society.
John Paige, the illustrator, is a friend of the author and they worked together in Uganda for some years. His line drawings are as rich in drama and humour as the text is.
