Gilbert Browne was born in 1954 in Ayrshire in Scotland and now lives in London. He studied graphic design at Leeds Polytechnic specialising in printmaking and in 1976 was accepted at the Chelsea School of Art for a degree course in Autographics Fine Art Printing. In 1973 he was awarded a medal in the National Drawing Competition in Glasgow and was a prizewinner in the International competition on "Youth in the Environment of Today" in Turin. Gilbert Browne also illustrated the book "The Last Word" published by Blue Tunnel Publications in Bradford. He held his first major group exhibition in Leeds in 1975 and has had two one-man shows in Istambul at the Deko Art Gallery and at the British Consulate. After three years living in Turkey where he lectured in Graphic Design Browne returned to London in 1980 and joined Clarendon Graphics working as a master printer in their etching studio. In the comparatively few years since Gilbert Browne took up etching in earnest he has developed a formidable skill that combines precision and detail with ingenuity and invention-so that he is now one of the foremost in his field in the UK. As the years go by he finds he is increasingly attracted back to the landscape of his native Scotland which forms the basic of much of his recent work. Gilbert Browne is fond of fly-fishing and hiking and hill walking and it was long walks in the hills and over the moors of Ayrshire that originally inspired his work. He also admits to being influenced strongly by the engravings and etchings of Durer and Goya.
