Item Description
You are bidding on one Custom Made FABERGE Silver Kovsh circa 1909 - dating back to the years of Czar Nicholas II. This incredible piece was awarded to a senior military commander of the Russian National Guard (Warsaw Squadron) and has been passed down from generation to generation - we acquired this piece from the officer's direct descendant. It was awarded to the commander to commemorate the receipt of an award or as a farewell gift to honor his time served in that squadron. It features high relief silver work of Russian wording, dates, and engraved signatures of the high ranking commanders in his battalion.
Faberge was commissioned by these officers to create this one-of-a-kind piece. This piece has four spherical feet that are also embellished with beautiful scroll-work. There are (7) bezel-set cabochon cut gemstones including emerald, jade, tourmaline, black onyx, red agate, and mother of pearl. The front of the kovsh features an enameled military emblem that includes the two-headed eagle - Russia's state emblem from the 15th century to 1917. Stamped "84" for 84% pure silver. Faberge's Moscow maker's mark and symbol are stamped twice - on the base and also on the handle. A kovsh is an ancient drinking vessel from Russia. The earliest examples were made of wood. They were originally used for tasting and drinking of mead. Later, they were used as presentation awards and given by Czars to their supporters.
