Perennial 'Blue Lobelia' Cardinalis

Perennial blue lobelia is a relatively unknown perennial, with masses of absolutely-stunning blue blooms held on tall spikes! Blooms are true-blue, and not a shade of violet. Plants are very hardy, especially compared to red lobelia varieties, and will return year after year reliably. Grows 3-4 feet tall.  Hardy to zone 4, which is almost all of the US and Canada! Plant in part shade or part sun, and regular soil. It is interesting to note, we have been growing a massive clump (6' x 8') of this Blue Lobelia in our gardens (zone 4) for many years, and they perform well even through drought in our sandy soils! Blooms appear in late summer and into fall, when few other plants are in bloom. Hummingbirds love them!  As we are fortunate to have many healthy plants of this Blue Lobelia, we are able to offer these seeds at an excellent low price!

Name: Great Blue Lobelia

Height: 36-48" depending on moisture levels

Location: Part shade or part sun

Hardiness zones: 4-9

Bloom Time: Summer to fall. Blooms for many weeks.

Seed Size: Lobelia seeds are quite small. Do not bury them (see germination instructions below).

Note: This plant species is known to have toxicity. The ingestion of these seeds or this plant can cause serious illness or death. The juice or sap of these seeds or this plant may cause a skin rash or irritation.

Germination

These seeds can be started indoors, but actually do quite well being planted in the location that they are to grow! At any time of year, simply lightly rake the ground, scatter the seeds on the surface (do not bury them) and water them in. They will germinate best during periods of wet weather, usually in spring or fall (or during wet weather in winter if your climate allows), but can also easily be planted in summer also if you are willing to water them, or if you are willing to wait for mother nature to help out with rain!
