January 28, 2014 update: I have developed new design polymer rear lens caps that are half the height of normal EOS caps and wider so you can stand your lens on the cap with more security and you can put the cap in your pocket without a big bump showing. I will be including one of these new EdCaps with each kit sold.
July 11, 2013 update: At long last the FDn 85mm/1.8 and FDn 20mm/2.8 lens kits are finally ready so you can start to order them! Many of the kits now come with EdBushings instead of EdLinks including both the 85/1.8 and 20/2.8 lenses, this replaces both the EdLink and the original Canon iron ring inside because many of the iron rings were missing screw holes for attaching the EdLinks. Just take the old iron ring out and put the new EdBushing in and it connects to the outer aperture control ring by its inner tab. Kits that now come with EdBushing are the 15/2.8 fisheye, 20/2.8 (=EB1) 17/4, 24/2, 28/2, 35/2, 50/1.4 (=EB2) 24/1.4L (=EB24L) 50/1.2L (=EB50L) 85/1.2L (=EB85L) and 85/1.8 (=EB85/1.8).
June 23,2013 update: I will no longer be including a rear lens cap or any screwdrivers with my kits anymore. The reasons for not including caps are the standard EOS caps are too tall to send in letter mail and I am told the reason there is often a delay in international customers getting the kits is that the extra thickness is causing jams in automatic letter sorting equipment and extra customs attention. For a while now I have been sending wooden rear lens caps that are less tall but they take as long for me to machine as the adapter and this is really slowing down my limited production time on my personal garage vertical CNC mill. Plus the wood makes a real mess of my garage and quickly causes a fire hazard with all the dust. The reason I am dropping the screwdrivers is that the small inexpensive ones I have been sending with some kits are not very good, this causes a greater risk of screw heads stripping than using a high quality larger grip phillips 0 or 00 drivers that can be found at any worldwide local hardware store. A larger grip allows more downwards force to be applied which is very important in minimizing screw head damage. Another reason I am dropping the small sharp screwdrivers is that I think it will again help minimize customs inspection slow downs and reduce risks of package damage. I am sorry for any inconvenience this causes anyone but I am just trying to put my limited time and focus on developing and producing the highest quality EOS conversion kits I can and help make sure they can arrive to my worldwide customers as safely and quickly as possible.
Also note that some of these lens kits have been updated to Gen2 designs and I have not had time to update the pictures yet. The EdShield for most lenses has been replaced by an EdBaffle that looks really great and masks much of the brass of the adapter face inside the camera to minimize reflections. Also some EdLinks have been replaced with Delrin material EdBushings since Canon removed the screws off some of the inside iron rings for cost savings in later years which eliminates the attachment point for the EdLink. The EdBushings replace the iron ring and EdLink and connect to the aperture control ring by capturing the small inside tab on it.
This new EdMika adapter kit fits many more lenses than previous kits we have made. This conversion kit includes 1x EdMika FDn-EOS-A brass adapter body, 1x EdLink or EdBushing, 1x EdShield or EdBaffle. You only need to have your own good quality small phillips screwdriver to do the conversion.
When you purchase this adapter kit you must include a PayPal note or send me an email or contact me through ebay messaging system with the type of lens from the below list that you want to convert so I can send you the proper EdLink and to program your chip correctly. If there is no note included I will attempt to contact you through your paypal email address and the eBay message system to ask this question again.
The main brass adapter body will fit most FDn mount lenses but will not fit any of the older FD lenses that are the silver ring/breech lock mounts. So far I have full kits for the lenses listed in the chart below. These kits allow you to replace the original mount with an EOS mount that will give infinity focus AND will allow you to control the aperture as well. This give you much better image quality compared to the usual FD-EOS adapters available for sale. Those cheap standard adapters use corrective lenses to give infinity focus and with that you lose so much detail as well as a stop of light that it is just not worth using.
If you have Canon FDn mount lenses that are not on this list you will still be able to mount the brass adapter and get infinity focusing on most of them but you would not have aperture control, you would have to shoot wide open only. The FDn 7.5mm Fisheye has a different bolt pattern so I will be making a different adapter for it (June 28th update, the prototype is working and the 7.5mm fisheye EOS kit will be coming soon).
As always each EdMika adapter comes with the latest Generation 4 Dandelion chip that will come to you preprogrammed with your lens focal length and reporting the maximum aperture. These chips are mostly useful for proper light metering and EXIF data reporting but they are also focus confirmation chips. I recommend using 10x live view for most accurate focus or getting a good focus screen. You can program the chip through your camera and calibrate the focus spot but I find accuracy is so so. If you want no chip please send me a note and I will refund 10 dollars from your purchase price. Dandelion chips are having signal loss issues with 7D camera bodies causing problems mostly for video so if you have a 7D I recommend getting no chip. Proper metering is still possible without a chip in Av/Aperture priority mode.
360 Brass was chosen over stainless steel or aluminum because brass is softer than camera and lens flanges ensuring no surface damage yet it is still strong enough to hold on through even heavy abuse. It also allowed us to skip coatings so we could maintain higher tolerances because of the variability of a coating process and because glue holding af-confirm chips bonds well to bare metal but poorly to coatings.
Some of these converted lenses come in contact with the thick mirror of the 5D2 and 6D (same distances as 5D2) and less thick mirror of the 5D3 and a couple contact the 1D4. This does no damage to the lens or mirror (I have hit thousands of times now) and can be overcome by focusing closer, going to live view and then focusing up to infinity. All crop sensor bodies are safe with no mirror hits on any lens at any focus distance. The below chart gives an idea of distances before mirror contact on which lenses and bodies. Some full frame shooters shave the mirror slightly to overcome the contact issue if they don't want to use the live view workaround. Please note there are two versions of the 200mm 2.8 lens and for now I only have the EdLink developed for the version that has a 1.5 foot minimum focus distance, not the version that has a 1.8 foot minimum (but that will be coming soon).
