This is an extremely rare collection of British field medical cards. The set is comprised of 43 cards for 12 soldiers from the King’s Liverpool Regiment. The soldiers’ names all begin with the letter H and they are all officers. Each card is dated with a description of the soldier’s diagnosis, their service, the hospital they were sent to, etc. There are one or two from 1916 and one from 1919, the rest all being dated either 1917 or 1918.This is a really unique and interesting glimpse into the soldiers’ daily life.I have only included photos of the fronts of the cards but if you would like to see the backs, I can add them or send them to you.

For those of you that may not be familiar with what a fieldmedical card is; when a soldier got sick or was wounded, they would be broughtto the field surgeon and examined. The field surgeon would then determine whatthe ailment was and where to send the soldier for treatment. That informationwould be written on a card (the field medical card) which would go with the soldierthroughout his treatment and be added to by the doctors, hospital, etc. If thesoldier was not able to carry the card (because of injuries) they would pin itto his clothing. That card would, eventually become part of the soldier’spermanent record. It is unusual to find any of these cards as they would bedestroyed by the army after a period of time, usually about 50 years. I had notseen one until I got this set.

A note about the items in my auctions: I am a private collector and have decided to sell a part of my collection of WWI millitaria. I collected the pieces, mostly during the early 1970’s; at a time when there was little interest in WWI so I am confident about the authenticity of all the items I have up for auction. I am a believer in the “caretaker” aspect of collecting so I am offering them to you in the same condition that I collected them in some 40 years ago. I have quite a few items that I will be listing as time allows, so keep an eye out for new auctions.  I am happy to answer any questions you might have and….happy bidding!
